Dating to 1893, Rosapenna is one of Ireland's oldest and most historic golf resorts. The original links was laid out by Old Tom Morris of St Andrews and later enhanced by James Braid and Harry Vardon; today's Old Tom Morris Links preserves that heritage within an evolved modern routing.
Three links, three eras
What makes Rosapenna remarkable is the range. The Old Tom Morris Links is the traditional, historic round, comparatively forgiving and full of seaside character. The Sandy Hills Links, opened by Pat Ruddy in 2003, is the muscular one, enclosed by towering dunes and asking for precise, committed golf. And the St Patrick's Links, opened in 2021, is Tom Doak's expansive, strategic modern links, quickly ranked among the finest in the world and a large part of why Donegal now sits firmly on the golfing map.
The setting
Rosapenna occupies an 800-acre coastal estate set between two sandy beaches, with the four-star resort hotel among the dunes. Because everything is on one estate, you can base yourself in a single place and play all three links over two or three unhurried days.
Where it fits a trip
Rosapenna anchors a north-west journey through Ireland's least-crowded championship coast. It pairs naturally with Ballyliffin and the other Donegal links, and can continue to County Sligo Golf Club and Enniscrone on a longer route. It is genuinely remote, so it rewards being built into the shape of a trip. City of Derry and Donegal are the nearest regional airports, while Belfast and Dublin provide the wider range of international connections.
Our view
Stay two or preferably three nights. If time is short, play St Patrick's and Sandy Hills as the priority pair, and add the Old Tom Morris Links for the full Rosapenna story or as a more relaxed arrival-day round. The hotel is a comfortable four-star with an unbeatable links-and-sea setting, and the luxury here is in the access and the location as much as the rooms.
